Memmel Makes her Case Stronger and Some (Finally!) Official Scores from the Friendly Meet

Here are some hardcore facts from the recent Friendly Meet. Go to USA Gymnastics webpage to look up more if you like.

Chellsie Memmel!!!!! She won EF bars with a 16.000 and a 6.9 A-score. I am so excited to hear that. Four hit routines in June will buy you an Olympic spot. Her beam is up to a 6.7 A-score. Floor is only a 5.9? Maybe there was a fall or something.

Ashley Priess‘s mystery A-score on bars turns out to be a 6.6. She scores well though. A 15.750 and 15.800. With Memmel going strong the next two meets, I think Priess and Shayla Worley are fighting over the last spot. I think Samantha Peszek has sold her case as the person to fill in the last spot on FX and VT for team finals.

Ivana Hong has only a 6.3 A-score for bars. I do not think she is going to Beijing. Even as the alternate.

Alicia Sacramone had A-scores of 6.8 EF and 7.0 AA for beam. Wow. You are soooo going to Beijing. Her FX A-score (which is rumored to possibly be watered down) is a 6.2.

So yes, to reiterate, Chellise now holds the second highest difficulty value on bars in the country as far as we know. Even if every other event is not up to par, should this bar routine continue to be performed cleanly, then I can totally see Chellsie going to Beijing even if for only one event.

I agree- I think that as long as Chellsie stays healthy and continues to hit UB between now and August, she has her long deserved Olympic ticket. As for the last spot, I think a lot of it has to do with Shayla’s back. Ashley seems back to full strength, but Shayla may be going the opposite way- although I really hope not. She definitely adds a little flair to the team dynamics I think. So, my team picks as of today are Nast, Shawn, Sac, Sam, Chellsie, and Shayla/Ashley. As for alternates, I see Bridget, Ivana (simply because she has a pretty decent DTY and it might be needed in a pinch, and either Shayla or Ash). Just my $0.02….

Ivana Hong will at least be an alternate at the olympics games. Although her bars scores aren’t as high as some of the others, her vault and beam routines were very high, as seen in the friendly meet. Moreover, it seems like Ivana upgraded her floor routine as well.

Aww that would be a shame if Chellsie were just sent to do bars in Beijing. She’s by far the 2nd best AAer in the US.

I wish Alicia would concentrate on vault and floor. I really want her to medal on both events at Beijing.

I’m not sure it’s safe to concentrate on only two events. It’s true Annia was chosen for one event but she could do all four.

marrianne, hows chellsie second best?? at this point, nastia, shawn, samantha, shayla, ivana, and priess are better than her

There is no way spastic Peszek does team finals on floor.

    Her landings are a mess.

Memmel fell off bars in the AA and had a problem on floor or she would have won the AA.

Why is nobody talking about Jana Bieger–is she hurt? My O pics for now are the three “givens”–Shawn, Nast, A-Sac. That leaves a big hole on vault, so add in Sam Peszek and a big hole on bars–add in Chellsie Memmel. One spot left. Who can do a decent floor routine for the third score? I’d pick Bieger just for her consistency (everyone wants to forget the girl won a SILVER AA medal at worlds!) and experience! Alts would be Shayla if she’s healthy and Ivana. I think there are a couple more big unknowns–(1) Can Darlene/Darling Hill pull it out? You KNOW NBC would eat up the story line of her persevering through her grandmother’s death and would make her a US sentimental favorite. Plus the girl has power and could really contribute both vault and floor. (2) What juniors-now-just-in-time-seniors are lurking in the background? All of a sudden I’m hearing all these rumblings about Chelsea Davis. What’s she good at? What about Mattie Larson? Any others? What, realistically, are their chances? Bela always loved to put one younger/relatively “unknown” on the team–think Tasha Schwikert in ’00 and then it was almost Carly Janiga in ’04.
Finally, there’s a big article on InsideGymnastics that talks about how the Olympic team will be picked. You have to finish in Top 12 AA at Nat’s to be invited to camp. Does that mean A-Sac will have to compete bars at Nationals? Please explain…
