Results From Some Meet in France = More Analysis on China’s Olympic Team

So thank you to David who always makes EXCELLENT points on this page, I have pulled up the results from Qualifications from the French Nationals (??? Don’t get the title of the meet because some of the Chinese are competing)  Here are the results

1.  Yang Yilin- 62.700

VT- 15.125

UB- 16.650-7.7

BB- 15.750-6.6

FX- 15.175-6.2

Notes:  Yang is establishing herself as quite the All-Arounder!  She is maintaining good consistency, and she maybe able to be used for team finals on floor!  I am quite impressed with her.  She is an obvious lock to the Chinese team.

2.  Jiang Yuyuan- 60.675

VT- 14.575

UB- 15.800-7.3

BB- 15.025- 6.4

FX- 15.275- 6.3

Notes:  It does not look as if Jiang performed her Amanar.  Only an 8.5 from the B-panel on bars, hmmm.  Is that a fall?  I am sure she will be on the team, but she needs a little more to be in the running for a podium finish for the AA in Beijing.

Cheng Fei

VT- 15.200

BB- 15.550- 6.6

FX- 14.275- 6.2

Notes:  Ahhhh!  What’s going on?  I am thinking she only threw a DTY for vault, fine, she does that a lot in the smaller competitions.  But an 8.075 B-score on floor?  I am not really worried, I just not only want her difficulty back up but I want to see her strong in Beijing!

Sui Lu

UB- 15.125- 6.3

BB- 13.725- 6.7

FX- 14.700- 6.4

Notes:  I think Sui Lu is sealing her Olympic fate here.  Beam and floor need to be a lot higher scores.  7.025 B-score on beam sounds like she fell multiple times.  She also went fully out of bounds on floor.  I don;t know if I would take her!  She seems to pose too much of a risk!  Sheesh, take Zhang Nan!  Maybe you will only get a 15.4ish on beam, but at least you won’t have a 13!

Sorry to skip over the French Girls, I am so very interested in analyzing the Chinese!  At this point, I would consider taking someone like Zhang or Pang Panpan.  The Chinese need solid scores.  Even if your A-score is so high a fall will score higher than a gymnast with a hit routine of sub-par difficulty, you don’t want falls!  Falls can hurt the mindset of the team and add too much pressure.  The Chinese team will have quite enough pressure.

Anyway, more thoughts to come though after the Finals of this competition.  Wow, only a few more days until Olympic Trials begins!  I hope I can get some info at the podium training.  Also, for those of you that don’t know,  Shawn Johnson’s gym is flooded!  I heard she may have moved over Iowa State to train.  I feel bad for Chow.

Less than two months to Beijing and counting!

  • With these numbers Yang could win the Olympic All Around Gold medal. I think her rise is similar to Gutzu’s rise. She had a good but solid “debut” in the previous world championship. Went home and did some upgrading. The only thing that hurts her is that there is no Euorpean Championship for her to establish her reputation as an All Arounder.

Still I really like her chances because Yang doesn’t have a weak event. When you think about it Shawn while strong in three events, is really subpar on bars. Nastia is subpar on vault/floor. Jiang subpar on beam. I don’t know about Barbosa, I think as far as floor is concerned Barbosa is inconsistent.

Plus, unlike Shawn and Barbosa, Yang is much more graceful and has artistry. In that sense, Yang is kind of the medium ground between Nastia and Shawn.

I really hope Yang does well in the Olympics.

  • Shawn has moved to Iowa State to train prior to leaving for trials on Monday. Chow’s gym likely won’t be up and running until well after the Olympic Trials, and there are thus rumors that Shawn may go to the ranch to train after the Trials up until she leaves for Beijing. There was apparently a report that Shawn is packing her bags with the thought that she is going to be away from home until after the Olympics are concluded. Some very interesting developments from the Chinese delegation indeed! I will be writing up on this and more on Polish 101.

  • yang is my personal favorite for the AA gold :)

however i disagree with becca. nastia has the same start value and scoring potential as nastia on floor. and yang yilin is strong on beam but she frequently misses connections and takes balance checks. however she still probably is the best well-rounded gymnast

i dont think she is a medium between nastia and shawn. i think yang IS the chinese nastia as jiang is kind of like shawn. yang and nastia have the 7.7 on bars while jiang and shawn have the amanar

  • JYY is my pick for AA gold. I think she is amazing

  • I see your point Catherine, but I think that Yang is still more “all around than Nastia” is.

Don’t get me wrong, Nastia is better than Yang on beam and on bars.

But, Yang has a DTY that is supposedly extremely strong… Something we have yet to see from Nastia once. Plus, Nastia as of late has been inconsistent on floor and her tumbling is not that clean. They may have the “same” start value on floor but I think that Yang’s more consistent there.

I think that Nastia is the prettier gymnast, and Yang to me can be a bit robotic even though she has creative moves. But Yang has nice lines, and as I said before a decent vault.

  • Sorry for the double post, but maybe Yang is really a Chinese version, albeit with more creativity of Carly Patterson? Amazing on one event “world class there” and solid on the other events.

  • This meet is the french nationals and french olympic trials, but 4 chinese and beth tweddle were invited to join the competitions.

It was reported that Beth Tweddle quitted after suffering a foot injure during the training. I am very concerned about the seriousness of her injure. It will be a great loss if she can not compete the UB and FX in the coming Olympics.
